The story of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, from his first steps in art to the moment he sold his first painting, shot by the wife and muse of Jim Jarmusch, Sara Driver. A portrait of the artist as a young man is always a thrilling type of documentary, especially when the setting is New York of the late 1970s and early 1980s, on the brink of disaster. In a ruined city, where empty buildings were set on fire to collect insurance money, this Haitian boy with a big coat and a shaved head looked like another nearly homeless artist, with no prospects to speak of at all. Rich with archival footage and interviews with some of Basquiat’s less famous contemporaries, Sara Driver’s film brilliantly captures the atmosphere where such a creator could come to exist. Bohemian parties, where Afrika Bambaataa’s music mixed with the no-wave crowd. The first major hip-hop groups and graffiti-bombed trains in Queens and the Bronx. Courageous anti-establishment window d, dominated by minimalism and overpaid curators.

Jean-Michel — the guest at every party, the creator behind an opening in a clothing shop, a graffiti artist with the tag SAMO, a musician, and a truly homeless person — appears here in stories from people who knew him well: as a surprising child of his era, ambitious and fearless, with a million ideas ready to be brought to life. Whether in the thick of events while simultaneously drawing and changing the world around him, make art both for himself and for his neighbors, to be full of enthusiasm and believe unconditionally in recognition — Boom for Real tells about his first forays in art and the irreplaceable context that turned Basquiat into a hero of the century from a tiny subculture of a couple hundred people. On the one hand, this is the New York of risk, danger, fear, and despair — but on the other, it is full of the directors, musicians, and artists who were capable of communicating this very feeling to the masses. An inspired story about a time when there was nothing to lose, and about several phenomenally talented people who took matters into their own hands.
