With this film, Chaplin bid farewell to silent film, and audiences first heard the voice of the Little Tramp. The Tramp is working on the conveyer belt in a huge factory, and the monotonous work is literally driving him crazy: he winds up in a psychiatric hospital. As he leaves, he looks for a new job, but he is accidentally taken for a Communist agitator and put in jail. Upon his release, the Tramp meets a young orphan girl and becomes her friend and guardian. Together, they try to set themselves up in the tough contemporary world: sometimes, successfully, and other times not. However, the Tramp never loses his strength of spirit, and have survived a multitude of funny adventures, he and the girl ultimately set off on a new road, off into the sunset.
