The 1970s. At the height of the Cold War, the whole planet’s attention turns to the “fight of the century” — the match for the title of chess world champion in Reykjavik. The battle between the Soviet Union’s greatest player, Boris Spassky, and the fanatical American Bobby Fisher turns into a fight for intellectual superiority between two grandmasters. They have everything to lose. A worldwide scandal explodes around the duel. Spassky has to cope with unprecedented pressure, and at the same time, Fisher, tormented by paranoia, is slowly gripped by madness...
The film is based on the real story of the sporting and political standoff between two great countries and their best chess players. A truly impassioned Tobey Maguire plays Bobby Fisher, and is thought to be an Oscar favourite for his performance. The film participated in the Toronto Film Festival.
