Andrey Konchalovsky’s new film tells the story of Michelangelo Buonarroti, the great artist—and sinner. He dedicated his whole life to the search for God, but he was tormented by challenges that were all too earthly and human. Having finished work on the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo must begin work on creating Pope Julius II’s tomb, on order from the della Rovere family. But then he gets a new order from Florence’s Medici clan, and he finds himself entwined in a battle between the two powerful dynasties. The artist must evade and lie, and tries to use the rivalry of the powerful merchants in order to win himself some freedom, but he drives himself deeper and deeper into a trap. Betrayal and the death of his loved ones serve as payment for his conscious and unwitting sins.
