This documentary by Sergey Loznitsa is based on a film shoot that took place from 5–9 March 1953, when the entire Soviet Union bid farewell to Joseph Stalin. The dictator’s funeral were the culmination of his cult of personality. Thanks to unique archive materials, the majority of which were never before published, we can watch every step of this grandiose spectacle and gain unprecedented access to the dramatic and absurd experience of life and death under Stalin’s rule, which in turn gives us an understanding of the regime itself and his legacy which can be felt to this day.
