On 30 July, Pioner and MasterCard will show another classic film as part of the “Priceless Cities in Film” festival – Orson Welles’ noir classic, “The Lady from Shanghai.”
On a deserted street in nighttime New York, the unemployed sailor Michael O’Hara (Orson Welles) frees the beautiful Elsa from hooligans. She introduces herself as a Russian girl, originally from Shanghai. Though Michael senses something funny, Elsa half-tricks him into working on a yacht owned by her husband, the successful (and polio-ridden) lawyer Arthur Bannister.
Smitten on the spot by the blonde bombshell, Michael sets off together with them on a cruise to San Francisco. And slowly falls into a deadly trap set by his companions. Orson Welles’ visually-stunning and technically-advanced noir, The Lady from Shanghai, was one of the first big Hollywood films primarily shot on location, rather than in the studio. San Francisco became one of the central locations, with its long and hilly streets, opening into deep narrowing perspective shots, tram tracks, ocean boardwalks, and gigantic public parks, all of which took on an ominous character in Orson Welles’ imagination.
The unbelievable “Lady from Shanghai” has appeared on many lists of the “best films of all time,” and the final scene, in a hall of mirrors – an infernal funhouse – has long been considered one of the greatest achievements of cinematic art.
