Andrey Tarkovsky’s last film, the great master’s last will and testament, returns to the big screen. This mystical fable, infused with Biblical motifs, is a concentrate of the great director’s thoughts on the meaning of life, destiny, and a person’s responsibility for what takes place in the world.
Alexander, a journalist, writer, and former actor lives on the island of Gotland with his wife, daughter, and young son, the latter of which is mute after an operation on his vocal cords.. On his birthday, he finds out that the world has experienced a catastrophe: nuclear war has begun. In desperation, Alexander promises to sacrifice everything he loves if only the war would end. The next morning, the world does indeed return to normal, but what is the true cost that he must pay for it? A film intentionally shot to permit the most widely varied interpretations continues to make us look for answers to the fundamental questions of life to this day.
