On 29 September, as part of the as part of Pioner and MasterCard’s “Priceless Cities in Cinema” Festival, there will be a special screening of “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

Vicky and Cristina are two American friends, and Barcelona is the city where they’re spending their summer. The twists and curves of Gaudi’s architecture, live Spanish guitar, the maze of narrow streets in the old city…all of this is on the girls’ to-do list for their vacation, but naturally, the obligatory tourist program is complicated by something completely out of the blue – romance. Vicky, a level-headed brunette (Rebecca Hall), has a fiancé in Manhattan, a practical streak, and a low-grade anxiety disorder; Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) has airy dreams about self-expression and a knack for adventure. The shenanigans begin when the girls meet a gorgeous painter (Javier Bardem) with an intriguing past (which soon appears in the present in the form of Penelope Cruz) an exhibition, and get an invitation to spend the weekend in Oviedo, with a full complement of walks, dinners, and love. Knowing full well that a proper vacation in Spain is about more than studying architecture, the girls agree.

“Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is the best of Woody Allen’s later comedies. They pretend to be light-hearted, but they have explosive impact. There’s no exit from the love polygon that the characters lock themselves into that would please everyone. “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” seems like a breezy vacation comedy, but plays out as a piece for Spanish guitar on the ultimate impossibility of true, happy love.

For the role of the artist’s temperamental wife, Maria Elena, Penelope Cruz won an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, and a Goya Award, and the film as a whole was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy – not to mention the unfading love of audiences around the world.
